MORAY FARM CLUSTER

Working together for a resilient, productive landscape

Our Landscape

The Laich of Moray is a rich agricultural coastal plain spanning Fochabers to Forres, to deliver nature restoration at a landscape scale. These landholdings all share a connection to the network of freshwater habitats that bisect the landscape, the Spynie Canal, its associated wetlands, the Lossie and the Innes Canal.

The ground is very low lying, some below sea level and is defined by good quality, light soils. The farming landscape of the cluster sits between the city of Elgin and the sea. It is a unique landscape, and its freshwater particularly attract a range of bird species and other wildlife that thrive in the network of habitats.

Our Vision

Is for a resilient working landscape where nature and farmers work side-by-side.

We aspire to being the first group of our kind in Scotland to work together to create, improve and extend habitat at scale in an arable landscape: integrating and making more space for nature alongside agricultural operations.

The Moray Farm Cluster

How we work

Founded in 2023, we are neighbouring farmers and landowners, who meet regularly to share our knowledge and experiences of land management and learn from each other. We are bound by a simple memorandum of understanding that commits us to working across our farm boundaries.

We received funding from the Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation in 2023 and nature restoration funding from NatureScot in 2024. Sylvestris help facilitate the group and coordinate and apply for funding to achieve our aims.
